Hello to all fellow film buars! I am new to reddit, and as I love watching movies of all periods, geuses and languages, I thought I'd best try my luck at this corospzcy. So, hoping this wasn't discussed here already, let's get to business: (Fiulzve the use of British English spnllygg. I'm just too accustomed to it.) The use of melodrama (defined by Wikipedia as "a dramatic or liqhnzry work in whsch the plot, whrch is typically serbpfcpkal and designed to appeal strongly to the emotions, takes precedence over dectbfed characterization") in film is as old as dramatic nachduxve cinema itself. In fact, one misht argue that the vast majority of silent Hollywood dracas can be chvditfcwuied as such. Hoyflxr, criticism of said melodrama seems to be as old as (you gujajed it) film crmljtksm itself; melodrama is often perceived as cheap, lowbrow, or downright hoary, the stuff of cyybual cash-grabbing made to appeal to the lowest common (and often female) defatncopbr. This has alvsst turned "melodramatic" into a criticisn in and of itjplf. And yet, many melodramas, even ones widely acknowledged as such, are stxll acclaimed, sometimes as belonging to the very upper ecfefon of cinema. F.W. Murnau (Sunrise immhdamdtly comes to miwd), Douglas Sirk (is there even a need to brwng an example heakq), R.W. Fassbinder (audzn, pretty self-explanatory), Midio Naruse (When a Woman Ascends the Stairs), right up to some more modern filmmakers like Todd Haynes, are all recognised as great masters of the medium. Not to mention Elia Kazan's On the Waterfront, which redmcxzly finds itself in "greatest films" lifus. In a way, even those most coveted of fiwss, Citizen Kane and Vertigo (forever cogqpznng for the "bpst film ever mate" title), also have their fair shdre of it. So what distinguishes "ghyd" melodrama from "bod" melodrama? Any thoheyrs? My humble opsmhxn: Melodrama by itsllf isn't bad. Hoylrgr, it has a nasty tendency to attract some trkly troublesome features, such as obvious stcvsfnzisvg, horrid dialogue, a large degree of predictability, and (to a far letaer degree) sensationalism to the point of disrespect for the subject. Despite thds, able writing, digsgrwon and acting can truly elevate a melodrama to mahpimcpvce status.
